Alice and Gilbert Smith |
Although I was close to both of my maternal grandparents...I was Grandma's Girl!
I loved making Birthday Cakes with her. I loved watching Soap Opera's with her, and even sat still during Price is Right for her (I still can't sit still for that show).
I loved decorating her ceramic Christmas tree for the holidays. I loved tinkering with all her breakable knick knacks...But I wanted nothing to do with the ugly Frog that she had. That thing scared me. So much so, that for me, Grandma made a jail for the Frog so I wouldn't be afraid of him anymore...he still scared me. I loved that I still remember how she taught me how to tell if all the shampoo was rinsed out of my hair...When it "Squeeks" that's when it's all gone. And I remember watching the Challenger Disaster with her and the time she woke me up at 4am to watch Princess Diana and Prince Charles wed together. I was Grandma's Girl!
Why do I tell you all these things about her? Because Blake's name came from her. Her maiden name was Blake and I always thought "That's a nice name."
June First isn't her birthday or even her death date, but the day that her name was finally etched in stone for all to remember her forever. You see, she died when I was a teenager and she never did get a proper headstone. The place she was put to rest, was unmarked and no one knew she was there. I could always walk up to the spot and I thought one day she'll have a marker. Last year she received her name in stone, 21 years later, now there's a place Blake and Preston, can go to visit her.
HER FINAL HOME HAS A HEADSTONE.
Rest in Peace Grandma I love you! |
